Youth Development Counselor

Position Description

​

Intertwined is seeking college-enrolled individuals to serve as program facilitators implementing curriculum and activities with middle school-aged students in a school-based environment.  Team member provides a quality experience to youth that focuses on developing their leadership and self-management skills, cultural awareness, and financial literacy. Team member is also responsible for completing administrative functions that support the success of the middle school program.

 

Employee Type: Part-time

 

Compensation: $14 - $18 per hour, depending on experience

Qualifications/Skills:

 

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required

  • Previous experience working with children in a childcare program, school or afterschool program and/or similar setting strongly preferred

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally-appropriate program activities with middle school-aged youth

  • Ability to maintain a safe classroom environment and to manage classroom dynamics in a healthy, productive, child-centered manner

  • Previous experience with and ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to communicate professionally in both spoken and written English

  • Proficiency with computers (Mac or PC) and common software tools such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite

  • Proficiency using various social media platforms

  • Must be able to become certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Child Abuse prevention

  • Must be able to clear a state and federal criminal background check

  • Must have transportation to travel to and from school campuses

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Program Quality: Plans, organizes and implements curriculum that includes both formal and informal learning. Makes the environment fun and engaging for students while achieving the stated outcomes for the program.

  • Leadership: Supervises the students, program area, and all activities. Makes sound decisions to ensure safety and productivity within the environment. Acts as a role model to the children by exemplifying the core values of Intertwined.

  • Community Engagement: Maintains communication with school and district staff to ensure effective coordination and collaboration. Engages with parent/caregiver as needed. Engages on various social media platforms to connect the community with Intertwined’s work. 

  • Daily Operations: Maintains the program site, equipment, and supplies in good order. Conducts the necessary set-up and breakdown of activities and cleaning of the program area.

  • Relationship-Building: Develops positive relationships with students, parents, and school staff. Collaborates and works effectively with Intertwined staff, co-facilitators and other volunteers.  

  • Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention: Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements. Ensures that the whereabouts of students are always known and that proper supervision is provided in high-risk areas such as bathrooms.

  • Administration: Assists with administrative functions of the program to ensure effective execution and proper accountability.

 

Work Schedule

 

Intertwined hosts programs on campuses at times that are convenient for our partner schools. This could be any time during the regular school week (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 11:00am to 6:30pm, and occasional Saturdays. Once the schedule is set with a school, it will remain fixed for the entire year. Applicants should be available to work up to 15 hours during the regular school week. The Fall 2023 schedule will be shared with applicants chosen for an interview.

 

Work Location

 

Schools serviced are in Northeast, South and Southeast Houston. If hired, applicant could be assigned to work in any of these areas.

A Paid Internship Opportunity!
Summer 2024

Intertwined in partnership with the West Orem YMCA is offering students the opportunity to participate in the Y's Leaders In Training (LIT) Internship, a 7-week summer experience that provides teens with the chance to gain positive work experience and to connect meaningfully to bettering the community. LITs work assisting full-time camp counselors in their childcare and program support role.

 

Typically families have to pay for their young person to join the Y's LIT program. But students who were enrolled in Intertwined during the school year can work at the West Orem YMCA...FREE OF CHARGE!

 

And even better, Intertwined will pay students a stipend of up to $400 for successful completion of their Y internship!

Conditions:

  • Student must be between the ages of 13-15 on June 1, 2024.

  • Student must be available to work at least 3 weeks of the 7-week program. (June 10, 2024 - July 26, 2024)

  • Student must be willing and able to arrive at the West Orem Y (5801 W Orem Dr.) every day by 8:30am, and to work for the entire day until 4:30pm.

  • Student (with parent/guardian assistance) must complete the application form in it's entirety

  • Student and a parent/guardian must attend an initial orientation meeting hosted by Intertwined, in addition to other mandatory training hosted by the YMCA.
